Speaker: Darryl Withrow ~ Prisoners’ Boxes
During the winter of 1838 the Toronto Jail housed a number of rebels who had taken part in the Mackenzie uprising ("the Rebellion of 1837"). Many of these men spent their time carving small wooden boxes that have been named "prisoners' boxes". These boxes have given us insight into the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of these men. Withrow’s talk will explore the boxes themselves and touch on the "new" history that has been discovered through the examination of these artifacts.

Over the past few years Darryl has spent many long hours researching and recreating many of the boxes. He will have with him some of the boxes he has carved as replicas of the originals. See PMVF for details.
