VACThe Loft Gallery Commission: Hissing Folly by Cole Swanson
For the 2020 iteration of the Loft Gallery Commission, Cole Swanson looks at Durham Region’s ecological landscape and poses critical questions around human relationships with invasive species, specifically phragmites (European common reed). Phragmites is a perennial grass that spreads quickly and out-competes native species for water and nutrients. This plant has been damaging ecosystems in Ontario for decades including areas of Clarington and the wider Durham Region. Working with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA), this collaborative project will result in the collection and removal of phragmites from the Thickson Woods Land Trust of Durham Region. The harvested phragmites will be used as materials for an immersive sculpture in the VAC using a centuries-long tradition of thatching. The resulting exhibition will consider phragmites as a historically valuable construction material with creative potential while educating the public on the risks posed by the plant to the ecosystems present in Clarington and the surrounding region.
Cole Swanson’s cross-disciplinary artistic practice spans over 15 years. Using sound, installation, painting, and sculpture his work explores interspecies relationships as they relate to complex coevolutionary systems. Swanson holds a BA in Studio Art from the University of Guelph and an MA in Art History from the University of Toronto. His work has been exhibited in exhibitions in Canada and international venues across four continents. He is a two-time national fellowship winner through the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (2007, 2014) for his research on miniature paintings and Jaipur school fresco techniques in Rajasthan.

VACOpening Reception: Z’otz* Collective: Waiting Outside of My Hand
Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 2 PM – 4 PM
Z’otz* Collective is a group of three artists with Latin American roots, who collaborate on multi-media works, which include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and site-specific drawing installations. In this exhibition, the artists will investigate the concept of the niche as a point of departure. A niche may be thought of as a recess or shadow box, to contain elements within a larger configuration. Exploring the notion of the space to incubate, collect, investigate, and share stories, the collective will create contemporary niches strategically placed within the content of a site-specific mural created by the artists.

“‘Nip ‘n Tuck’: The Whitby, Port Perry, and
Lindsay Railway”

Port Perry’s long-time historian, Paul Arculus, launched his new book on the WPP&LR late last year. While it was a short railway, it played a very important role in the economic and social development of the local communities it served.
The building of the railway makes for a fascinating
history given that the planning and construction was riddled with corruption, incompetence and scandal—with a murder thrown in for good measure.
