PineRidge Arts Council (PRAC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization that has encouraged and promoted the visual, performing and literary arts in the Durham Region since 1989.

The ongoing success of the creative community relies on bringing people together in conversation and collaboration. To document and promote arts events the ArtScene newsletter was developed in 1995. It started as a one page newsletter and it has grown to a 20+ pages published six times a year. Up to the end of 2018 it was mailed to members, groups and public facilities. It is now available on-line for all to enjoy. We constantly share members’ events in ArtScene, on Facebook, eNewsletters and on PRAC’s website.

PRAC focusses on providing opportunities to promote the arts and the artists in Durham. In addition to our Art in Public Places Project where original art work is displayed at multiple venues we host a juried Photography Exhibition in May and Juried Art Show in November. Both are in the atrium of the McLean Community Centre, Ajax. These are catered events and open to the public. The work is professionally juried and awards provided. There are youth specific awards to encourage students to enter their work for display, have the opportunity to meet other artists and gain recognition for their talent and creativity. The centre, the public and the artists benefit from this exposure and opportunity to network.

In April we hold Arts in Harmony, our Annual General Meeting. It highlights the performing arts and guests enjoy a concert as part of the AGM. We try to bring in different member performers each year and promote any up-coming events they have scheduled to help widen their potential audience. To raise additional funds to support our work, there is a raffle for a donated piece of art and silent auction tables. This catered event is open to the public and held in the Information Centre of Ontario Power Generation, Pickering. We look forward to resuming these in 2024.

PRAC was a founding partner with the City of Pickering in 1997 creating and developing Artfest on the Esplanade a popular and well attended event. Since May 2013 we have been able to offer Mask Magic free of charge to children of all ages.

In 2017 PRAC partnered with Angie Littlefield and Pickering Library to present Indie Author Day in Pickering. In 2019, 20 self-published authors participated with a panel discussion, meet with the public to discuss their books and were provided with an opportunity to sell books. We hope to continue this in 2023 at Artfest in May.

PRAC has also partnered with Ajax Public Library since 2011 with their children’s art show in February, Spark, a juried art show for kids from kindergarten to grade 8. A children’s juried art show was introduced to Pickering Library in 2016. Now called Noisy Art in the library.

Both of these children programmes are juried and the winning submissions receive prizes. The children (and their families) love this event and they are a fun way to encourage young artists to further develop their interest in visual arts. In 2022 each library saw over 70 entries!

A proposed project for 2023 will be Millennial Art Challenge or Dueling Brushes. It will be an art battle type event Target date is during Culture Days in September.

All of these events serve to develop an interest in the arts within our community but PRAC does so much more than that. We are supporters and promoters of other events and groups and provide sponsorships. For a complete list please let us know.

The work that PRAC does relies on the generosity of its members and the local business community. Organizations that provide financial support see part of that money go towards an award in their name or as an event sponsor. The remainder is used to support the multitude of groups and events in which PRAC is involved.
