Tips for selling your art at festivals.

Artfest, now in its 22nd year, will included over 80 artists, artisans and crafters selling original works and live performances
by local artists and groups.

"Projects for the 1997 Year: One of the big projects we would like to become a reality this year is an artisan show involving all the visual and performing artists. An outdoor show at Rotary Park in Ajax or at Pickering Town Hall with pantomime, bands, artists, craft show and hands-on demonstrations." from PRAC minutes.

First Artfest was held on
Saturday, September 12, 1997

Mother Nature must love the arts as she put a hold on the rain forecasted for that day which allowed us to hold another successful Artfest. Thanks to the loyal sponsorship of Ken Hall and Enbridge Pipelines Inc. for once again funding our Mask Magic event and to Rola Jaber for coordinating this very successful children’s activity. We are also thankful to the tire-less volunteers who helped Rola throughout the day – Nesrin Blair, Tanya Najib, Maggie Burgess and Gwen Williams so kids of all ages could paint, draw and glitter over 400 masks and have lots of fun with colour and design. Thanks also to artist Michael Jack and his youthful helpers Keira Mahoney, Thomas Liu and Emily Jack for teaching our young visitors how to create cartoons.

Sculpting, carving and more!

We’re also always grateful to sculptor Dorsey James for demonstrating and explaining his fascinating wood carvings. And to Mary Cook, our chief coordinator, cook and bottle-washer for this event and who was everywhere that day hanging sign sand banners, taking tons of photos, welcoming our PRAC exhibitors and making sure everyone was happy. And “manning” the Registration table in the very early hours was our indomitable team of Irene Seetner and Sam Murphy who under took the gargantuan task of registering all the artists, giving them their site locations, pointing them in the right direction and handing out information for the day.

At our PRAC Tent we were happy and thankful to have Lynda Meredith, Elsie Hetherman and Anja Knuuttila on hand to answer questions, give directions and encourage passers-by to investigate the many arts opportunities available in our community. Another happy addition to Artfest this year was the celebration of the life and art of artist Bill Lishman who passed away last year. Members of the Lishman Family shared their personal perspective about Bill’s life and work. And more thanks to the Cdn. Progress Dur. Reg. Women, Krystal Ferguson, Tanya Ryce and the City of Pickering Staff and volunteers for helping to make this such a great family and arts oriented day.

Mask Magic at Artfest Since 2014

Each year PineRidge Arts Council offers a new arts experience to visitors at Artfest. This year, thanks to the generosity of Enbridge Pipelines Inc., kids of all ages will be able to paint and decorate free wooden masks to take home. The annual popular outdoor event, Artfest on the Esplanade, brings families together at the arts and crafts tables. Parents, grandparents and kids will receive guidance and suggestions from a PRAC teaching artist (if they wish) and create their unique mask to show off and treasure.
