2015 Juror ~ Allan O'Marra ABOUT THE JUROR
Allan O’Marra is a graduate of OCAD University where he studied photography, painting and communications and design. He is an award-winning artist, art teacher, fine arts columnist and art exhibition jurist. He has had 33 solo fine art exhibitions and participated in over 70 group shows in a 44-year career, and has works of art in numerous private and corporate collections. He presently teaches art for the Pickering Recreation Department; in artist-in-the-school programs in various schools in the Durham Region; conducts professional artist workshops; and teaches art on a voluntary basis at the Ontario Shores Mental Health Centre in Whitby. He writes a column in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser durhamregion.com and is asked regularly to jury fine art and photography shows. JUROR’S COMMENTS Although, as a juror, a priority is maintaining critical awareness of sound technical attributes of the submitted photo images, my approach to jurying photography is, ultimately about finding a fine art connection between the photos and me. Appropriate focus, composition, light and shadow, colour sensibility and engaging subject matter are critical and imperative, however, there’s an ineffability, a delight, an engrossing viewer engagement that I look for that make some photo images rise above the rest. My artistic sensibilities are engaged and charged and delighted by the images that stand out and move me to choose them to be included in the exhibition; and the award winners take that engagement to an even higher level. In the end, choosing the best of show winners means not only acknowledging that their technical attributes are stellar, but that they have spoken to me in a very personal—sometimes intellectual—but usually, heartfelt way.
