juror’s comments
It is my sincere pleasure to have had the opportunity to jury this year’s selection of photographs for the PineRidge Arts Council. Art is powerful, not just for its beauty or the talent needed for its creation, but because it can evoke emotion. Art can make political statements, or challenge preconceived ideas about the world. The unique aspects of photographic art can relate to not only what the artist is depicting but also how the artist is representing the subject. Good photographic art either explores new subjects, or old subjects from a fresh perspective. When you look at the photographs in this exhibit, please ask yourself what is different in the work from all the other art you’ve seen? Sometimes art will jump out at you, sometimes it won’t. If you do notice something different, decide for yourself what unique quality enhances the piece as a whole.
I applaud the efforts of all of the artists who made submissions to this exhibition. There were many excellent images to choose from which made selecting the award winning submissions challenging. The images represented in this exhibit are diverse and range in theme from documentary, portrait, landscape, abstract and conceptual photography. The wide array of artistic style impressed me.
As an artist I chose the final images based on the objective of creating and engaging an interesting exhibition for the public to view. I selected work that encourages the audience to consider the meaning behind each photograph. In my opinion this exhibit is a true success. As a juror the quality and breadth of the entries allowed me the special opportunity to showcase the great talent of the PineRidge Arts Council photographers.
