2018 President’s Message

Over the past 28 years our volunteer administrated organization through dedication, passion and expansive communication, has truly blossomed and fulfilled our mandate to develop widespread appreciation and support for the arts in our community.

This PRAC team is the best team ever and I am honoured to be a part of this fun and productive group. Here is a brief synopsis of what we have been up to over the past year.
Newspaper: Our ArtScene run is 2000 and every two months we mail out approximately 1200. The remainder are distributed by hand by Elsie Hetherman at various locations in Durham Region and beyond. Mike Scholte completes the paperwork for mailing as well as delivering ArtScene to the Post Office. In 2018 we will investigate pros and cons of posting ArtScene online and eliminating the mail-out, thereby eliminating considerable costs and physical labour involved.

Website: Webmistress Mary Cook does a fabulous job keeping our sites up to date and our members informed. Memberships and Juried Art and Photography Show entries can be made on-line with JotForm with payments through PayPal and E-transfer. Members may also sent us events info this way for posting and ArtScene.

Activities During the Past Year:
• Organized our 18th Annual Juried Art Show at the McLean Community Centre in Ajax resulting in 190 entries. Our Juried Show Chairs, Susan Brown and Brian Smallman were instrumental in making this show another brilliant success. Lynda Meredith, Volunteer Coordinator, once again enlisted many PRAC volunteers to keep the artwork moving smoothly. Our placer Gwen Williams expertly positioned the artwork, our juror Anik Glaude chose 65 works to exhibit and on Opening Night we proudly awarded $4,800 in awards to 16 winning artists in both adult and youth categories.
• Held our 4th Juried Photography Exhibition at the McLean Centre with Juror Sonya Jones and Chairs Susan Brown and Brian Smallman.
Once again we were excited by the keen response of our photographic artists and we were thrilled to give away over $3,000 in awards to 11 winners, again in the adult and youth categories. Our 2018 Juried Phography Exhibition Opening Reception and Awards will be on May 3rd, Lynda may be calling on you for support.
• In addition, we were able to sponsor many of our member’s events in the community, both financially and with in-kind donations, for example:
• Ajax Creative Arts Spring and Fall Shows v Durham West Arts Centre Studio Tour • Art Guild of Scarborough • Durham Philharmonic Choir
• Oshawa Art Association’s Gallery 67 • Pickering Rotary Music Festival
• Scugog Arts Council’s Literary Contect • St. Francis Centre
• Station Gallery • Whitevale Wharfwood Project
