to Sept 6 ~ Station Gallery

Station GallerySteve Nelson ~ Camp 30 Revisited
August 4 – September 6, 2020 in the Jill Dyall Community Gallery
2020 Lambs Road in Bowmanville, Ontario. Today this is a heritage location designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in September 2013. Decades earlier, this site served as a Canadian-run POW camp for German officers. The compound was in full operation during the height of the Second World War. It was known as Camp 30.
Today all that remains are the hollow shells of the derelict complex. Professional photographer Steve Nelson invokes a stark vision of Camp 30, a place aggravated by time. He states: “My intent in photographing Camp 30 in Bowmanville was to give the feeling of actually walking around the camp shortly after it was abandoned as a POW facility. Therefore, I have presented the images in black and white with a nostalgic, gritty film effect.” His black and white images of the abandoned complex suggest an introspective experience of wandering through—as though in a waking dream—a site haunted by history.

VAC Erika DeFreitas: an object, a gesture, a scene (II)
Exhibition: September 8 - November 8
Thinking through the dichotomy of absence and presence, Erika DeFreitas continues a body of work that responds to two cloaked public sculptures encountered by the artist. DeFreitas explores the notions of what remains, what is suggested, and the possibilities that lie in ambiguity. The works shown at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington will include a series of new and existing works in the form of works on paper, video, and photography.
